Course Description: This online graduate course will explore the art of storytelling through the genre of the short story in the French-speaking world. This course will also teach students about the diversity of francophone culture (e.g., France, Algeria, Sénégal, Canada). After a brief introduction to short fiction in medieval and early modern France, the course focuses primarily on the development of the short story in a variety of French-speaking countries from the twentieth century to the current period. In addition to discovering the cultural and historical background to short stories, students will practice basic literary analysis, participate in group discussions, design lesson plans, and create a teaching portfolio that appropriately incorporates course material into the L2 French classroom.
