This online graduate course provides an overview of the shifts within the field of world language education from the past to the present and identifies their impact on literacy development in the world language classroom. Further, this course discusses the complexity of communicative competence and emphasizes the importance of learning support through scaffolded activities for both young and adolescent language learners. Finally, the course will model how current standards-based world language educational practices can and do promote students’ literacy development.
